Below is a family biography included in The History of Franklin County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Oscar Ehlers, sheriff of Franklin County, Mo., was born in that county and State, May 12, 1860, the son of William Ehlers, a farmer of Lyon Township, of this county. The father was a native of Germany, and emigrated to America about 1845. Our subject attained his majority on the farm, received the rudiments of an education in the common schools, and finished at Johnson’s Commercial College, at St. Louis, Mo. He left home in 1878 and located in New Haven, where he engaged in merchandising for about three years. He located in Union in 1881, and took a position as deputy collector under R. M. Armstrong, which position he held for two years, after which he resumed merchandising at Champion City, Mo. In November, 1886, he was elected as sheriff on the Democratic ticket, receiving a majority of 279 votes, though the county is largely Republican. He is now filling the office with ability and to the satisfaction of all concerned.
