Below is a family biography included in the Biographical Annals of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania published in 1905 by The Genealogical Publishing Company.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

J. ADAIR HERMAN was born April 17, 1876, and was educated in the public schools of Carlisle and at Dickinson College from which institution he graduated in 1896. He registered as a student-at-law with A. G. Miller, Esq., and at the same time entered upon a course in the Dickinson Law School, from which he graduated in 1898. He was admitted to the Cumberland county Bar June 8, 1898, and later to Supreme Court practice. On April 28, 1898, he enlisted in Company G, 8th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, for the Spanish-American war, and served in Gen. Gobin’s brigade until March 7, 1899, doing duty at Camp Alger, Va., Camp Meade, Pa., and Camp McKenzie, Augusta, Ga. He is a member of Company G, 8th Regiment, National Guard of Pennsylvania, and holds the rank of adjutant of the Second Battalion. During the coal strike of 1897, he did duty at Hazleton; in the strike of 1900, he was on duty at Shenandoah; and in 1902, again on duty at Shenandoah for a period of ninety days.

Mr. Herman, as was his father before him, is a Democrat, and active in his party’s interest in nearly every campaign. He is a member of the Phi Kappa Psi college fraternity, of which his father was one of the organizers in 1859, and also of the Cumberland county Bar Association.
