L. D. Stone, dealer in musical instruments, stationery, etc., is a native of Arkansas, and the son of Rufus and Fannie A. (Flournor) Stone, who were both natives of Independence County, Ark. The grandparents were early settlers of this county. Rufus Stone and his brother were killed in the late war, the brother at the battle of Chickamauga. The former was taken prisoner, and while in prison at Little Rock, in trying to escape, jumped off into the Mississippi River just below Memphis, and was drowned. The mother died in Memphis of the small-pox. L. D. Stone was the only child born to this union, and was left an orphan when but a lad. He was educated principally at Batesville, and took a commercial course at Lexington, Ky. In February, 1886, he engaged in his present business, and has since carried it on. He has an extensive trade, which he has built up entirely himself, and his career affords an excellent example of what pluck and energy can accomplish under adverse circumstances and against keen competition. He carries a full line of musical instruments, stationery, etc. Aside from this, he is the owner of about 380 acres of White River bottom land, which is under cultivation, and carried on by tenants. He deals extensively in stock.
