Washington, D. C., Trinity Episcopal Church and Unfinished Capitol Building, historic photo

An historic photo of the Trinity Episcopal Church at 3rd and Indiana Avenue (now known as Third and C Streets NW), Washington, D. C. with the unfinished Capitol building in the background. The white area on the ground between the church and Capitol buildings is sorted stone of various shapes and sizes to be used in the construction of the Capitol building. The church building was built in 1850-51 and was designed by architect James Renwick who also designed the Smithsonian Castle building. The church building served as a hospital during the Civil War. In 1936, the building was demolished and has been replaced by the Department of Labor building. This photo is from 1862, during the Civil War while Abraham Lincoln was President.

This photo is by George N. Barnard, 1862.
