New Birmingham, Texas, Dallas Street, historic photo

A historic photo view is of Dallas Street, New Birmingham, Texas picturing The Pioneer Hardware Store - Arnold & Lacy & Co. The next building to the left is a dry goods store; the two story building at the far left is a saloon. New Birmingham, Texas was incorporated in 1889 and became a quick growing boom town of the time. Just two years later in 1891 when this photo was taken, more than 400 buildings had been built and the population had grown to 1,500. By 1893, the boom had collapsed and the population began to rapidly decline. In 1910, just 21 years after its founding, the population had shrunk to zero with only a few of the buildings remaining. In 1932, the last remaining building was demolished leaving no trace of what once was believed would become a large and important industrial city.

This photo is from an historic promotional booklet, New Birmingham, Texas as it is October 1891.

New Birmingham was in Cherokee County, Texas, located in eastern Texas.
