The replicated Mayflower ship known as Mayflower II sitting at dock in the harbor at Plymouth, Massachusetts. The original Mayflower ship was scrapped and dismantled in about 1624. The ship measured about 100 feet long and about 25 feet wide at the widest point. The original Mayflower ship along with another ship named the Speedwell left England in late July, 1620. After several stops to take on additional supplies, the two ships set sail for the new world on August 5, 1620. The Speedwell soon suffered several serious leaks and was forced to turn back. As a result, all were forced to travel in very crowded conditions on the Mayflower with a total of 102 passengers and about 25 to 30 crew members. After several months of difficult travel conditions, land in the new world was first sighted at what is now known as Cape Cod, on November 9, 1620. After two more days, landing was first made at Provincetown, Cape Cod. After hostile encounters with the local natives at this location, it was decided to seek a more suitable location. On December 16, 1620, the Mayflower landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts where the Plymouth settlement was established. See the additional photo below.
