A historic photo view of Cairo, Illinois. The building at the lower right is the (Army) Brigade hospital. At the bottom center is the headquarters of the Doctor (Dr. Linn or Sims?) of the Brigade Hospital. At the upper left are Ice Houses used for the storage of ice harvested from the Mississippi River. To the right of the Ice Houses are Colonel Paine's barracks. Signs on buildings that can read include: I. Merrick Boarding House, Lodging and Meals at all Hours; Black Smithing and Wagon Making; Stapleton House, Groceries, Provisions, Liquors; Jackson House, Patrick Burke (?). This view is across the city of Cairo toward the Mississippi River which runs in the background of the photo.

Cairo is the county seat of Alexander County, Illinois, at the far southern tip of the State of Illinois.
