Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, USS Arizona after attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941, historic photo

A historic photo view of the USS Arizona, mostly obscured by the heavy smoke, after the attack on the Pearl Harbor Naval Base on December 7, 1941. Of the 2,403 persons killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor, nearly half, 1,177 were on board the USS Arizona. Eight battleships were based on Battleship Row at the time of the attack and all were damaged. Four of the battleships, including the USS Arizona, were sunk. With the exception of the USS Arizona, all of these battleships were raised, repaired and returned to active service. Due to heavy explosions, the USS Arizona was deemed to be too heavily damaged to be salvaged and remains at the bottom of the harbor. A memorial known as the USS Arizona Memorial now straddles the remains of the ship. This is now the most visited site in Hawaii and is a National Historic Landmark. See the additional photo below.
