A 1906 photo view of Market Street, San Francisco, California as it appeared a short time before the San Francisco Earthquake which occurred on April 18, 1906. Most of the buildings in this photo were either heavily damaged or destroyed by the earthquake and by the fires during the following days. It is estimated that more 80% of the city was destroyed. The tallest building is the Chronicle Building which at the time was the home of the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper. Built in 1889, the Chronicle Building was damaged in the earthquake but was restored and still survives today. The newspaper moved to a new building in 1924.
