John W. Shaw, engaged in farming and stock raising and residing at Somerville; was born in Fayette County, Tenn., January 22, 1848, and is the son of Josiah Q. and Pheraby M. (Williams) Shaw, natives of North Carolina and Tennessee. Our subject was raised on a farm and educated at Somerville. In 1864 he went into the Confederate Army as a private in the Fourteenth Tennessee Cavalry in Forrest’s command, served until the close of the war and was paroled at Gainsville, Ala., May11, 1865. He then returned to Somerville, Tenn., and engaged in merchandising until 1867, when he turned his attention to farming and has continued it; he owns 200 acres of valuable land near Somerville and a great deal of real estate in the town, including two of the leading business blocks of the town. March 3, 1870, Mr. Shaw married Lizzie H., daughter of the late Dr. Josiah and Amy E. (Cocke) Higgason of Somerville. They have three children: Pheraby M., Lizzie H. and John W., Jr. Mr. and Mrs. Shaw are members of the Presbyterian Church. He is a member of the I. O. O. F. and a Democrat. He is one of the progressive farmers and substantial citizens of Fayette County.
