Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Crockett County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

T. N. Skelton, trustee of Crockett County, Tenn., was born in Mississippi May 14, 1844. His father was a Virginian, and died in 1846, shortly after his immigration to Mississippi. His mother, whose maiden name was Frances R. Noel, was also a Virginian, and died in Tennessee in 1865. Our subject is of Irish descent, and was the second of three children. He remained on the farm until the date of the late war, when he joined the Confederate Army, Twenty-seventh Tennessee Infantry, Company C. He was wounded in the left arm at Shiloh, shattering the bone above the elbow. The ball passed through his arm and lodged in a Testament in his pocket. After his recovery he joined the Kentucky campaign from Chattanooga, and was again wounded at Perryville, Ky. He was shot in the right shoulder and discharged, not being able for further duty. He returned home and attended school one year (1864), and at the expiration of the time began school-teaching, and continued until 1871, with the exception of one year, when he was a clerk in the merchandise business. In 1872 he began farming, and in 1882 was elected to his present position, and re-elected the two succeeding terms. He was married, October 13, 1870, to Margaret Dean. They have no children. Mr. Skelton is a Democrat.
