JAMES GILMORE, SR., retired farmer, post-office Turtle Creek, is probably one of the oldest citizens in Wilkins township. He was born in County Down, Ireland, in 1807, a son of James and Mary (McKee) Gilmore, also natives of Ireland, who were the parents of seven children, our subject being the only survivor. In 1832 five of this family with their widowed mother emigrated to America and settled in Pittsburgh, where they remained one year. James was the oldest son; in 1834 purchased the farm where he now resides, at that time containing one hundred acres and the property of John McKelvy. Mr. Gilmore married in 1830, Ann Jane Waugh, also a native of Ireland. Seven children have been born to this marriage four of whom are living: David W., James, William John and Flora (Mrs. Demster). Mr. Gilmore is a respected citizen, and has always taken an active interest in the welfare of his township. He was nine years school director, and his son is now a member of the board. They are members of the U. P. Church, Turtle Creek, and republicans.
