Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. G. W. GOODWIN, druggist, post office Bennett, was born June 13, 1843, in Pittsburgh, Pa., son of Samuel and Mary (McGeary) Goodwin, former of whom was a native of Lancashire, England, came to America when a young man, and settled in Pittsburgh; he was a baker by trade, but here he engaged in making pots for melting glass in furnaces. He died in 1854; his wife died young, leaving two children: Mrs. Emma Morrison, of Indiana county, Pa., and G. W. Goodwin, our subject, who was reared in Pittsburgh, and at the age of ten years entered a drugstore. At the age of seventeen years he enlisted in the 102d Regt. P. V. I., Co. M; participated in all the engagements of the Army of the Potomac, and was with Gen. Sheridan in the Shenandoah valley. He was discharged Nov. 1, 1864, and subsequently returned to the drug business. In November, 1873, he came to Millvale, where he opened a drug store for himself. The following January he was elected postmaster, which office he held until September, 1885. Mr. Goodwin was married to Anna E. Woods, of Pittsburgh, and they are the parents of five children, viz.: Samuel, Emma M., John W., Thomas M. and Mary J. Politically Mr. Goodwin is a republican, and is a member of the A. O. U. W. and G. A. R.
