Below is a family biography included in the History of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania published in 1889 by A. ANDREW SOLES (deceased) was born in Brownsville, Pa., in 1797, a son of Peter and Mary (Anderson) Soles. His father, a shoe maker by trade, and a native of Germany, settled in McKeesport in 1798, where he followed his trade, and was also engaged in business as a butcher. He reared a family of nine children: John, Peter, Jacob, Henry, Elizabeth (Mrs. Heckswelder), George, David, Mary (Mrs. Jacob Zeigler) and Andrew. Our subject was reared in McKeesport from the age of six months, and resided there until his death, which occurred Jan. 14, 1887, and was successively engaged in business as a river-man storekeeper and farmer. He was twice married, his first wife being Sarah Sinclair, by whom he had one daughter, Mary A. (deceased), who married Joel Crawford; his second wife was Mrs. Catherine Moffett, nee Dunn, daughter of Walter and Ellen (Brownlee) Dunn, of Beaver county. Pa., formerly of Scotland, by whom he had eight children: Anderson, Nellie, Sarah A., William, John, Robert, David and Catherine. Mr. Soles was one of the prominent citizens of McKeesport. He was street commissioner of the borough for several years, and superintended the grading of its first streets. He was a member of the First M. E. Church; in politics a democrat.
