Below is a family biography included in The History of Webster County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1889.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Daniel Wesley Robertson, the leading lumber dealer in Marshfield, Mo., is a native of Henry County, Tenn., where he was born May 14, 1844, being the son of James R. and Eleanor (Neese) Robertson, natives of North Carolina. The father of Mr. Robertson was born April 5, 1813, and died April 22, 1850. The mother died in October, 1865. They were married in their native State, and afterward removed to Henry County, Tenn., where they remained until 1842. They then settled in Greene County, where the father died, but the mother died in Webster County, Mo. Mr. Robertson, like the average country boy, assisted his mother on the farm, and received his education in the common schools. In 1862 he enlisted in Company D, Sixteenth Missouri Cavalry, and served nearly three years. He was wounded at Boonville, Mo., and was mustered out of service in July, 1865. After coming home he engaged in running a carding machine for about three years, and then for two years was interested in the furniture business. After this for eight years he was occupied in tilling the soil, and since 1880 he has been carrying on his present business, having a full line of lumber, sash, doors, paints, glass, etc. He is doing a good business, and is the owner of the old Barnes estate of this city. He was married, July 7, 1864, to Miss Mattie A. Shackelford, who was born in Greene County, Mo., August 8, 1845. To that union were born these children: Ida Ellen, born August 22, 1866, and died October 23, 1866; William Martin, born October 9, 1867, and died December 7, 1887; John Wesley, born March 11, 1869; Charles Calvin, born July 27, 1871; James Garland, born January 21, 1873; Daniel Alphonso, born June 3, 1874; Joseph Henry, born March 28, 1876; Ann Nettie, born July 29, 1877; Robert Josiah, born July 23, 1879; Eva Blanche, born December 14, 1882, and Christopher Wallace, born October 28. 1886. Mr. Robertson is Democratic in his political views. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, the G. A. R., and he and Mrs. Robertson are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He has four brothers and one sister, whose names are as follows, all now living: M. N., A. J., John S., James M. and Elizabeth Ann (Buck). John S. Robertson and Elizabeth Ann Buck live in Montana Territory, the others in Webster County, Mo.
