George W. Brown, a leading citizen of Texas County, Mo., was born in Guilford County, N. C., in April, 1834, his parents being William R. and Elizabeth (Bevel) Brown, who were born in Guilford County, N. C., December 26, 1808, and June 2, 1811, respectively, and were there reared and married, the date of the latter event being July 27, 1831. In the fall of 1834 they went to Wilson County, Tenn., where the father died July 8, 1846, when comparatively a young man. He was of Scotch descent, and his father was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. In the fall of 1857 George W. Brown emigrated with his mother from Tennessee to Texas County, Mo., and here the mother, who had married a Mr. Michael Shaver, in April, 1859, after her husband’s death, spent the remainder of her days, dying January 14, 1880, having been a worthy member of the Baptist Church for many years. Five children blessed their union: Mary C., wife of George Putnam; Eliza A., wife of W. T. Allman (she died in Benton County, Ark.); Francis (died in Wilson County, Tenn.), George W. and William J. George W. was the eldest son, and after his father’s death took care of and provided for the remaining members of the family, being engaged in farming. In the early part of 1863 he enlisted in Company E, Third Missouri Cavalry, United States Army, but was afterward transferred to Company A, of the Eleventh Missouri Cavalry, serving until the close of the war, and participating in many battles, among which were Jenkins’ Ferry, Prairie de Hand, Little Missouri River, Little Rock, the Biometer battle east of Little Rock, and many others. October 16, 1865, he was married to Mary A. Long, of Wilson County, Tenn., who was born September 10, 1839, and by her became the father of seven children, the following of whom are living: Thomas J., Albert M., Charles H., Martha and Josiah. James W., who was born April 16, 1857, died September 12, 1859, and John H., born May 7, 1869, died January 11, 1882. Mr. Brown has been a member of the Baptist Church for thirty-four years; is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and votes the Republican ticket.
