Joel Hawkins Fowler was born in Bedford County, Tenn., January 11, 1840, son of James S. and Jerusha (Burdett) Fowler, natives of Tennessee, and grandson of Richard Fowler, who was a native of Virginia. Joel H. Fowler is one of four sons and five daughters born to James S. Fowler and wife, who left Tennessee in 1841, and moved to Newton County, Mo., locating on Shoal Creek, where he farmed for seven years-he then located two miles south of Newtonia. Here Joel H. grew to manhood, and here, upon the breaking out of the war, went into the Confederate army, and served all through that struggle. After that eventful affair he returned and purchased property three miles east of Newtonia, where he has been engaged in farming ever since 1868. He was married in this county to Miss Maria R. Marshall, a native of Kentucky, and daughter of John C. and Martha (Isbell) Marshall, also natives of Kentucky. To Mr. and Mrs. Fowler have been born one son and two daughters: Mary Virginia (a teacher), William Carter and Martha Jerusha. Mrs. Fowler is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr. Fowler is the owner of 180 acres of land, 120 being in the home place. He has served on the school board of his district for some time. He and his sister, Margaret Frances, are the only ones of the large family now living in Newton County, Mo. The father and mother of our subject died in this county in 1855 and 1858, respectively.
