Below is a family biography included in The History of Newton County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

James Franklin Holmes, a resident of Section 29, Franklin Township, was born in Lincoln County, Tenn., August 24, 1834, and was reared principally in the State of Mississippi. During the late war Mr. Holmes enlisted in the Federal army, and served until the winter of 1863. His parents, Isham and Emillia B. (Jones) Holmes, were of old Virginia stock, and his grandfather, William Holmes, was a soldier in the war for independence. In 1839 Isham Holmes moved to Mississippi, where he remained until 1851, when he sold out, and after spending four and a half years in Texas, moved to Missouri, locating in Newton County. Here, in 1858, his son, James Franklin Holmes, married Miss Rebecca A. Kelly, which union has resulted in the birth of four sons and three daughters, viz.: Isham (on the detective force in Washington Territory), William, James, Balmy, Sarah, Stephen and Mary. Mr. Holmes is a successful farmer, and has a fine farm of 270 acres. He has served as a member of the school board, and is now a member of the Christian Church.
