Below is a family biography included in The History of Lawrence County, Missouri published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Jacob J. Hafley (the name being originally Haefele), blacksmith, wagon manufacturer and practical horse-shoer, was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, February 19, 1843, and is the son of Henry and Christiana (Grimm) Hafley who came to America in 1855 and settled in Cannelton, Ind., where Jacob J., the subject of this sketch, was reared, and he learned the blacksmith trade in Louisville, Ky. He served two years at horse-shoeing and four years at general blacksmithing. In 1868 he moved to Missouri, and in 1869 he bought property and engaged in business at Tipton, Mo. He left that town in 1873, moved to Lawrence County and settled on his present property in Peirce Township. He chose for his life’s companion Miss E. Cook, a native of Kentucky, and the daughter of John Cook. This union resulted in the birth of one son and two daughters: Pearl, Alfred and Ava. Mr. Hafley was city councilman of Tipton, Mo., was a member of the school board at that place, and himself, wife and eldest daughter are members of the Congregational Church. Mr. Hafley is also a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is a good citizen.
