H. H. Oberbeck, a worthy and wealthy farmer of Laclede County, Mo., is a native of Prussia, born August 15, 1841, being a son of William and Caroline (Frazer) Oberbeck, who were also born in Germany. They spent the greater portion of their lives in their native land, but the father made a visit to America. He was a cabinet maker by trade, and became the father of nine children, eight of whom are living: Carr, Caroline, Lottie, Henry, August, Herman H., Frederick and Minnie. Herman H. Oberbeck, whose name heads this sketch, learned the cabinet-maker’s trade in his native land, and followed that occupation for many years, and in the spring of 1867 sailed for America, taking passage at Bremen and landing at New York City. He first located in St. Louis, where he worked at his trade for about seven years, and then engaged in the wholesale and retail liquor business, afterward investing in a stock of groceries also. In 1877 he came to Laclede County and purchased 407 acres of land, with 100 under cultivation. He is quite extensively engaged in raising cattle and hogs, and is one of the progressive farmers of the county. In 1865 he wedded Miss Minnie Steinberger, a native of Germany, who died in 1886, having borne a family of seven children: Minnie, Annie, Henry, August, Mary, Lena and Ida. In June, 1888, he was married to Mollie Weirauch. He is a member of the Agricultural Wheel.
