My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN O’BRIEN was born in the year 1831, in Ireland, and in childhood was brought by his parents, Patrick and Kate O’Brien, to the United States. The family settled in the State of Indiana, where John grew to maturity, and where his parents died. He came from Indiana to Paducah, where he still resides, in the year 1856. For several years he engaged as rectifier of spirits, later as street contractor, and is now numbered among the old settlers as well as one of the most honored citizens of Paducah. He is at present engaged in an extensive coal trade, with yards on Locust Street, between Broadway and Jefferson Streets. Mr. O’Brien was married in Paducah, in 1860, to Miss Kate Connor, of that city, their union being blessed with three sons and three daughters. The family are members of the Catholic Church, Mr. O’Brien being also a member of the Catholic Knights of America.
