My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

ANDREW J. OGILVIE was born in Graves County, this State, March 11, 1832, and is a son of Lemuel H. Ogilvie. Our subject was reared on the farm and, the educational advantages of that day being very meager, was able to secure but little schooling until twenty-four years of age, when he attended a good district school for sixteen months. He has devoted his life principally to farm pursuits, his present farm property, consisting of 136 acres, having been brought to its present high state of cultivation and improved condition by arduous toil. Mr. Ogilvie is one of the oldest members of the Masonic fraternity, in the country and has represented his lodge in the grand lodge several times. He is a member of the K. of H. and also of the U. W. In August, 1874, he was elected sheriff and served in that capacity four years, having been re-elected. During his term of office he took 130 convicts to State prison, and throughout his service was one of the most prompt and efficient officers in the people’s employ. He was married February 16, 1858, to Jeanette F. C. Young of this county. They have eleven children living.
