Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 8a by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1888.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

WILLIAM E. MONTZ, marshal of the Chancery Court of Louisville, was born in Jefferson County, Ind., February 1, 1842, and is a son of Jeremiah and Ellen (Cain) Montz, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Virginia. They came to Louisville about 1845, and he is now a government storekeeper. The subject was brought up in Louisville and received a common school education. When still a mere boy he became a deputy clerk in the chancery court clerk’s office, under Harry Stuckey, remaining one or two years. He afterward obtained the post of shipping clerk for G. Spratt & Co.’s tobacco warehouse, where he remained for five years. He was made deputy marshal of the chancery court, which position he held for eleven years, when he was elected to the office of marshal, which office he now holds. He is a fine business man, a popular and accommodating officiat, and a stanch Democrat.
