Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

HON. C. M. VAUGHAN was born September 9, 1837, in Nottaway County, Va. He is a son of Patrick H. and Louisa (Winfree) Vaughan. The father was born in Halifax County, Va.; he was engaged in farming and also carried on a blacksmith shop. Our subject soon after his father’s death came to Hickman County, where he has since resided. He has held the office of magistrate three years and sheriff four years. He represented this county in the legislature one term and is now a member of the State senate, representing the First District. He has also held the office of sinking fund commissioner three years. He enlisted in 1861 in Company B, Seventh Kentucky, Confederate States Army. He owns a farm of about 400 acres, two miles north of Clinton, where he now resides. He was married December 15, 1858 to Nancy E. Fowlks, of this county; nine children have blessed this union, seven sons and two daughters. Mr. and Mrs. Vaughan are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
