Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

S. A. D. STEELE, Fulton County, was born January 16, 1821, in Caldwell County, Ky. He is the first of three children, two boys and one girl, born to John and Mary (Downey) Steele. The father was a native of Pennsylvania and of English descent; his mother of Dutch descent. The grandparents were Jesse Steele and Samuel Downey. The former was a soldier in the Revolution; John Steele served under Gen. Harrison in the war of 1812. Grandfather Downey was in the Indian wars in Kentucky under Boone, and was among the very early settlers of this State. Subject’s mother died when he was about thirteen; his father, in 1851, aged seventy-eight. Subject was married June 14, 1842, to Miss Elizabeth Green, of Mobile, Ala., daughter of John and Elizabeth Green. Ten children blessed this union, viz.: Mary E., deceased; Sarah J., wife of T. B. Burnett; T. P.; Louisa A., deceased; William; A. L.; Catherine R., deceased; Emily C.; Clara V., deceased, and Robert E. L. deceased. Mrs. Steele died October, 1868, aged forty-eight, a devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Steele was next married October 14, 1875, to Miss Lou Warren, of Clark County, Miss., and daughter of Abel and Huldah A. (Spurlin) Warren. The father was a native of Kentucky; the mother of Alabama. Six children have resulted from this marriage: Gertrude, Jennie, Samuel A. D., Anna, Addie and an infant unnamed; the last three are deceased. Mr. and Mrs. Steele are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South; he is a local preacher, was licensed in 1857, and ordained deacon, in 1866, by Bishop Wightmon, and has been preaching ever since. In 1843 subject was licensed to practice law in Choctaw County, Miss., and has since followed his profession. He was a soldier in the late war, having enlisted in the Confederate Army in the summer of 1863, going out as captain in Col. Perrin’s Mississippi cavalry regiment. Among the battles in which he participated might be mentioned Darby House, New Hope Church, Atlanta, Macon, Columbus and Montgomery, where he was sent to the Hospital and remained from July to September. He obtained leave of absence and came home, where he remained until January, 1865. He then returned to camp at Tuscaloosa, Ala., where he remained until the surrender. He then returned home, soon after which he was elected, against three other candidates, to the legislature under the military government, and took part in the canvass against the adoption of the new constitution in 1868-69. In 1871 he was elected State senator, which office he held for four years. He then came to Clinton, Ky., where he was appointed attorney for the C., St. L. & N. O. and M. & O. Railways. In this capacity he served until 1876, since which time he has been practicing his profession. He moved to Fulton in 1875, where he has remained ever since. Since the war he has continued to take an active part in politics. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity and has held all of the offices in the lodge.
