Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

THOMAS NEWMAN, was born October 4, 1829, in Ballard County, Ky., where he grew to manhood, and in 1855, removed to Parker County, Tex., where he joined the Texas Rangers, and served three years during the late war; in 1866 he returned to Ballard County, where he has since resided. His father, Andrew Newman, a native of Butler County, Ky., was born in 1801, came to Ballard County in 1832, where he long served as constable and magistrate and died in 1881. He was the son of Thomas, of Nelson County, Ky. Subject’s mother, Abigail, daughter of James Armstrong, of Butler County, was born in 1804. The children of herself and husband are: Nicy J. (Stovall), Isaac L, Elizabeth A. (Kimmell), subject, Irena, Cyrene (Burrow), David P. and Andrew L. On March 3, 1853, subject was married to Miss Sarah E., daughter of Wilson and Marrilla (Rhea) Copeland, of Ballard County, born October 3, 1833, and to them have been born: Marrilla J., Sardinia R. (Hook), Andrew W., Samuel A. (deceased), Sarah T. (Hook), Ida (Preston) Isaac B., Joshua E., Annie, Abigail, Olivia and Thomas T. Subject is a farmer having 160 acres of good land in a high state of cultivation. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity and in politics a Democrat.
