My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

JOHN B. LANE, farmer and stock-raiser, was born March 6, 1837, in Charlotte County, Va., and is the youngest of seven children— four boys and three girls—born to James B. and Sarah H. (Harris) Lane, natives of Charlotte County, Va. His grandfathers were William Lane and Claiborne Harris, both farmers. William Lane was a soldier of the Revolution and of English descent, Claiborne Harris was of Irish descent. John B. was reared on a farm, and his early education was limited. The father died before our subject’s recollection, and the mother died in 1854. In 1851, with his mother, he moved to Christian County, Ky. In 1852 he came to Ballard County, where he has resided ever since with the exception of two years, when he was engaged in Christian County, Ky., in the grocery business and farming. He owned one negro when the war broke out, and is now the possessor of 139 acres of land, eighty acres cleared and in good condition. He was elected justice in 1879 for one term. He was married, June 6, 1861, to Jane E. McCutchen, of Ballard County, a native of Charlotte County, Va., and daughter of John and Mary (Blanks) McCutchen, natives of Virginia, and of Scotch-Irish descent To this union were born nine children: Edward B. (deceased), Sarah A. (deceased), Mary E., John J., Martha L., Harriet B., William Benjamin, Oscar George, Allen C. Mr. Lane and wife and elder daughters are members of the Baptist Church. Subject was formerly a member of the Grange, and cast his first presidential vote for Breckinridge in 1860.
