Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

BENJAMIN A. LANE, an enterprising farmer of Ballard County, was born in Charlotte County, Va., December 11, 1832, and is the sixth of seven children born to James B. and Sarah (Harris) Lane, natives of Virginia. The father of subject was a son of William Lane, whose wife was a Bond, of English descent. Our subject’s mother was the daughter of Claiborne and Sarah (Hudson) Harris. Benjamin A. Lane was reared on a farm; his father died about 1837; he continued to live with his mother till he became of age, but moved to Christian County, Ky., in the fall of 1851; in February, 1853, he moved to Ballard County; in 1857 he located where he now resides on 160 acres, to which he has continued to add till he now owns 350 acres of land, in three different tracts, in good condition; he started in life with about $500. He was married March 22, 1855, to Harriet L. Blanks, of Ballard County, born in Charlotte County, Va., and the daughter of Allen W. and Harriet (Hester) Blanks, who were born in Virginia and North Carolina respectively, and of Irish origin. To this union were born eight children: James B., W. R., J. R., Mary L. (deceased), Benjamin A., Kittie (deceased), Minnie Lee and Callie. His wife died in November, 1879, a member of the Baptist Church. Subject next married, on August 4, 1880, Mrs. D. E. Armstrong, a daughter of Frank and Rebecca (Cole) Moss; she had one child by Armstrong —(Frank). Mr. Lane and wife are Baptist, and he is a Mason and a member of the K. of H. fraternity.
