Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 1 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1885.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

ALFRED THOMPSON, an enterprising farmer and stock-raiser of Ballard County, was born March 23, 1837, in Greenup County, Ky. He is the first of three children born to Jackson and Winny (Alexander) Thompson, natives of Lee County, Va., and Wilkes County, N. C., respectively, of Scotch and English descent. The father was a son of William Thompson, who was a soldier in the war of 1812. The mother was a daughter of Willis Alexander, who married a Miss Holbrook. Alfred was reared on a farm, and , attended the common schools when not engaged in the duties incident to farm life. He taught school three terms, and lived with his parents till he became of age. He moved with his parents to Catlettsburgh, Boyd Co., Ky., where he engaged in the hotel business. In 1872 the hotel was washed away, and in 1875 he was burned out. In 1879 he moved to where he now resides, in North Ballard County, on 400 acres owned by his wife, 250 of which are cleared and in good condition. While in Catlettsburgh he was constable one term, and one year police judge. He was married, May 1, 1863, to Adeline D. Fisher, of Greenup County, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Sutton) Fisher, natives of Bedford County, Penn., and of Dutch descent. To them were born three children: Eva A. (now Brown), Ella M. and Eugene (deceased). Mr. and Mrs. Thompson are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
