My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

P. P. McVEIGH, Sr., president of the Covington Transfer Company, is a native of Dumfries, Scotland, born January 1, 1834; was educated at the academy in the same city, and is a son of Patrick and Ellen (O’Hara) McVeigh, natives of Ireland. Patrick McVeigh landed at New York in 1849, and at once went to Buffalo, N. Y., where he remained two years, and in the meantime our subject and his mother followed. They all went from there to Meigs County, Ohio, and remained about two years farming. In 1854 the family moved to Cincinnati, where the father opened a dry goods and grocery store, remained about one and one-half years, then moved to Covington, Ky., and was engaged in merchandising until his death, which occurred in 1868. P. P. McVeigh worked around the rolling mill for two years. He then commenced the transfer business on a small scale, but finally secured the charter for the Covington Transfer Company, and has been connected with it ever since. In 1885 he and his sons, Charles and P. P., Jr., became the proprietors. They have fourteen four-horse teams, two two-horse teams and five drays, employing forty men. P. P. McVeigh, Sr., was married May 31, 1854, to Mary Sweney, of Jackson County, Ohio, daughter of Andrew Sweney. Eleven children have blessed this marriage, ten of whom are living: Mary E., Charles, Peter P., Belle, Emma, Margaret, Agnes, Allie, Josie and Bernitta. All the family are members of the Catholic Church, and Mr. McVeigh is a Democrat politically.
