My Genealogy Hound

Below is a family biography from the book, History of Kentucky, Edition 7 by J. H. Battle, W. H. Perrin and G. C. Kniffin and published by F. A. Battey Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Grandfather Hughes was born in Washington County, Penn., and Grandfather Lewis Crisler, of German descent, came from Virginia, settled on Gunpowder Creek, and built a water mill and distillery. Ethan Allen Hughes is still living in Boone County, about one mile from Burlington. George G. Hughes received an academical education, and read law under J. W. Calvert, beginning in 1863; he then entered the Ohio State and Union Law College, at Cleveland, Ohio, from which he graduated in 1867, and at once commenced practice in Burlington. November 12, 1876, he married Miss Hattie, a daughter of Thomas Dempsey, an old resident of Kenton County. To this marriage have been born one boy, William C., June 19, 1880, and one girl, Arta Wallace, July 4, 1882. The Doctor is a R. A. M., and in politics is a Republican. His great-grandfather, Col. Hugh Hughes, of the Revolutionary war, was a close confident of Gen. Washington, and after the independence of the colonies was gained and acknowledged, married and settled in Washington County, Penn.
