Dr. J. W. Daly, a prominent physician, surgeon and farmer of Alabama Township, Nevada County, is a man who in public and social life is much honored in the district in which he resides. For many years he has resided in this county, having settled and cultivated the farm upon which he now lives as early as 1863, immediately after he returned from the war. He enlisted in 1861 on the Confederate side, partially organizing the company of which he was lieutenant, and participating in many of the famous battles—Carthage, Oak Hill and others, and serving as assistant surgeon under Dr. Hale, captain of the company. Dr. Hale had practiced medicine quite successfully previous to the beginning of the war, and naturally, therefore, turned his attention to the same profession when discharged for disability. His fame is extensive throughout the county, and his practice increases rapidly with the passing years. In connection with his profession, the Doctor devotes much attention to agriculture, owning a valuable estate of 520 acres. In 1865 he married Miss Maria Munn, who was born in Tennessee and educated in Arkansas, and of this union have been born eight children, viz.: Lawrence M., James, John W., Elizabeth, Moses G., Sarah, Walter and Maud. Both Dr. and Mrs. Daly are devout members of the Missionary Baptist Church. He has amassed the bulk of his fortune since the war, and is to day a prosperous, popular and learned gentleman, and one who has the welfare of humanity very much at heart. August 21, 1835, the subject of this sketch was born in Howard County, Mo. He is the son of James Daly, who was born in Kentucky, and moved, with his father, from the Blue-Grass country to Missouri. The grandfather of Dr. Daly, Lawrence Daly, was a native of Ireland, and after emigrating to America taught school in Kentucky for a period of thirty years, and later, in Howard County, followed the same profession, and lived to extreme old age. Dr. Daly’s mother was Miss Sarah Medley previous to her marriage. She was born in Howard County, Mo., and died there about the year 1842.
