Ed Hood, sheriff and collector of Nevada County, owes his nativity to this county, where he was born in August, 1852, a son of Thomas and Charlotte (Harris) Hood, the former a native of Pennsylvania and the latter of Louisiana, who came to Arkansas about 1844, locating in Lafayette County. The father was then a young man and was engaged for some time in the saw-mill business at Lewisville. In 1847 he removed to Nevada County and engaged in agricultural pursuits, which he followed until his death, which occurred in 1863. The mother is still living. They were the parents of five children, of whom the subject of this sketch is the second oldest. He was reared and educated in this county, being brought upon his father’s farm, and followed this vocation until 1884, when he was appointed deputy sheriff. In 1888 he was elected to his present office, which he has filled with honor to himself, and satisfaction to all concerned. He is a prominent and enterprising young man, and owns 800 acres of land, with about 150 acres under cultivation, considerable of it in pasture. He is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is as yet unmarried.
