Andrew G. McCauley, merchant, and notary public, Pleasant Plains, Ark. As might naturally be expected, mention is made in the present work of many citizens of Independence County, Ark., now prominent in their different callings, but none more so than Mr. McCauley, who represents the mercantile interest of this vicinity. Born in Covington, Tipton County, Tenn., on January 29, 1851, he is the son of John A. and Emaline, (Cheek) McCauley, both natives of North Carolina. The parents were married in 1844, and five years later moved to Arkansas, where the father received his final summons. His excellent wife still survives. They became the parents of six children, all now living with the exception of one. Andrew G. McCauley secured a good practical education in the private schools, and subsequently engaged in merchandising at Pleasant Plains (then Fairview), Independence County, Ark., in 1875, and has continued there since. He carries a first-class stock of goods, such as dry-goods, boots, shoes, hats, caps and general supplies. He has assisting him Mr. Blackburn, an accomplished salesman, who gains many customers by his pleasant, social manners. Mr. McCauley is also notary public, has been postmaster for thirteen years, and also filled the office of justice of the peace in a satisfactory manner for four years. His marriage was consummated in 1878 to Miss Gertrude Garretson, of New Jersey, and they have two children, Beulah B., aged nine years, and Garrie G., who died at the age of seventeen months. Mr. McCauley is the owner of 120 acres of fine land, and also valuable property in the town of Pleasant Plains. He is a stanch Democrat and a firm believer in Democracy. He also takes a great interest in the progress of the State and county.
