New Kent, Virginia, St. Peter's Church, vintage postcard, historic photo

A vintage postcard of the St. Peter's Church, New Kent, Virginia. Built in 1703, it is believed that George Washington and Martha Dandridge Custis were married here on January 6, 1759. This postcard view is from about 1910.

The church building received considerable damage during the Civil War, when Union Soldiers used the building as a horse stable. After the war, Robert E. Lee (who was married to Mary Custis, the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington) stated that "St. Peters is the church where General Washington was married and attended in early life. It would be a shame to America if allowed to go to destruction."

The church is now more than 300 years old and has been restored to as nearly as possible to its original condition. In 1960, the church was designated by the Virginia General Assembly as "The First Church of the First First-Lady." St. Peter's Church is located near Talleysville, New Kent County, in eastern Virginia.

See the historic Civil War photo of this church below.
