Duxbury, Massachusetts, John Alden House, vintage postcard photos

A vintage postcard view of the John Alden House, Duxbury, Massachusetts. John Alden was a member of the Mayflower ship crew who elected to stay at Plymouth rather than return with the Mayflower when it returned to England. His assigned task was as a cooper (barrel maker) to maintain and repair the barrels of supplies on board. Alden was among those that signed the Mayflower Compact. In 1621, Alden married Priscilla Mullens and in the following years together would have ten children. As a result, there are more descendants of John Alden and Priscilla Mullens than of any other Plymouth Colony couple. John Alden and Priscilla Mullens are the central figures along with Myles (Miles) Standish in the poem, The Courtship of Miles Standish, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Priscilla died about the year 1685 and John Alden died in 1687; both are buried in the Myles Standish Burial Ground in Duxbury, Massachusetts. The John Alden House is still standing and is available for tours. See several interior views of the John Alden House below.
