New York Battery and Old Castle Garden, Historic Photograph

New York Battery and Old Castle Garden, historic photograph

In this vintage photo:

New York Bay and the old Castle Garden immigration facility. Ellis Island can be seen in the background of the harbor at the left. The Castle Garden immigration center operated between August 1, 1855 and April 18, 1890 and was operated jointly by The City and State of New York. It served as the first official point of entry for immigrants to America. The Federal government took over the processing of immigrants on April 19, 1890 when processing was shifted to the Barge Office facility.

After immigration had moved away from Castle Garden, the building was remodeled and converted to the New York City Aquarium which opened on December 10, 1896.

This photo is by Detroit Publishing Co., and dates from about 1900.
