Charleston, South Carolina, Ruins of Circular Church on Meeting Street, 1865, historic photo

An historic photo view of the ruins of the Circular Church, Charleston, South Carolina. The founding of this church congregation dates back to 1681. The church building in this photo was built in 1804 and had a circular design, thus the name, Circular Church. On December 11, 1861, a massive fire swept thru Charleston and destroyed this church building as well as much of the city. Artillery bombardment of Charleston during the Civil War began in late 1863 and continued at times into 1864, doing further damage to the buildings in the area.

In 1888, bricks were salvaged from the ruins of this structure to build the current church building at this same location. The adjoining church cemetery is the oldest in the city of Charleston and has tombstones dating back to 1695.

This photo is by George N. Barnard, April, 1865.
