The James home in rural Clay County, Missouri was the target of a fire bomb on January 26, 1875, by Allan Pinkerton, head of the Pinkerton Detective Agency. This resulted in the death of Archie Samuel. The mother of the James boys, Zerelda Samuel, also lost a arm in the blast.

The grave of Archie Samuel is in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Kearney, Missouri.

Kearney is in Clay County, Missouri.
