Florida, Missouri, Samuel Clemens, Mark Twain, Birthplace, historic photo

A historic photo view from about 1890 of the house at Florida, Missouri in which author Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was born on November 30, 1835. The Clemens family lived here until Samuel was about four or five years old when the family moved about 40 miles to the northeast to Hannibal, Missouri. Clemens made numerous trips back to Florida, Missouri to visit and stay with an uncle, John Quarles, who continued to live in the area. While the Clemens home at Florida still exists, it has been moved indoors to the nearby Mark Twain Birthplace State Historic Site at Florida which serves to protect the home and serve as a museum for various Mark Twain related items including a hand written manuscript of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer as well as first editions of several his books. The original site of the home is marked by a monument. The village of Florida, Missouri no longer has any residents as of the 2010 census.
