President Abraham Lincoln, Funeral Railroad Car, 1865, historic photo

An historic photo view of the Railroad Funeral Car used to carry the body of President Abraham Lincoln from Washington, D. C. back to his hometown of Springfield, Illinois for burial. As the funeral passed across the country, the funeral car was transferred between a number of railway companies in a procession that took from April 21, 1865 to May 3, 1865. The coffin bearing the body of Lincoln was removed from the train and transferred to a special hearse at a number of locations along the route for public viewings, funeral processions, and ceremonies. As a result, it is estimated that the train passed through 180 cities along the 1,654 mile route through seven states and that millions viewed some portion of the ceremonies or of the passage of the funeral train. This train car was destroyed in a fire near Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1911.

This photograph is by S. M. Fassett, 1865.
