Abraham Lincoln as a Candidate for President, 1860, historic photo

An historic photo of Abraham Lincoln as the Republican Party candidate for President in 1860. This photo was taken on June 3, 1860, just two weeks after Lincoln had won the Republican nomination on the third ballot on May 18, 1860.

The votes in the Presidential election of 1860 were divided between four different candidates:

Abraham Lincoln, from Illinois, Republican, who carried eighteen states consisting of the northeast and north central states plus California and Oregon. These eighteen states gave him 180 electoral votes (152 were needed to win). Nationally, Lincoln received 1,865,908 votes or 39.7% of the total votes.

John C. Breckinridge, from Kentucky, Southern Democratic Party, who carried eleven states across the south plus Maryland for 72 electoral votes. Nationally, Breckinridge received 848,019 votes or 18.2% of the total votes.

John Bell, from Tennessee, Constitutional Union Party, carried three states: Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky for 39 electoral votes. Nationally, Bell received 590,901 votes or 12.6% of the total votes.

Stephen A. Douglas, from Illinois, Democratic Party, carried only Missouri with 12 electoral votes. Nationally, Douglas received 1,380,202 votes or 29.5% of the total votes. Ironically, it was Douglas who had defeated Lincoln just two years before in the Illinois Senate race of 1858.
