Below is a family biography included in the book, The History of Tipton County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. S. E. Stephenson, county court clerk of Tipton County, was born in York District, S. C., September 1, 1846, being the youngest of twelve children born to Hamilton and Mary (McCollough) Stephenson, both natives of South Carolina and of Irish descent. The father was a farmer, born in 1794. He moved to Arkansas in 1853, and in 1860 to Tipton County, where he died in 1883. The mother was born in 1805, and died in 1884. Our subject was raised and educated at home, and to a great extent is self educated. In 1866 he married Annie, daughter of Capt. Efford and Bridget Owen, who were old residents of the county. The father held the rank of captain under Gen. Jackson. Mrs. Stephenson was born in Tipton County in February, 1847. They have six children: Mary B., Elizabeth A., William E., Lorinda B., Samuel O. and Elmer Efford. For some time after marriage Mr. Stephenson continued farming, and also taught school. December, 1873, he was elected magistrate of the Third District and served until January, 1883, when he was appointed deputy county court clerk, and in 1886 was elected county court clerk. In politics he is a Democrat. Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson belong to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He is a man of sterling good qualities, greatly liked by all who know him as a man and a citizen.
