Below is a family biography included in The History of Sumner County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

J. R. Hutchison, farmer and stock raiser, was born in Sumner County, Tenn., in 1826, and received his education in the county schools. At the age of fourteen he began working for himself in a blacksmith shop, learning the trade. He worked at this for about ten years, and then built a distillery and began the manufacture of whisky. In 1845 he married Margaret J. Hamilton, a native of Sumner County, born in 1828, and the daughter of Capt. Harry and Jane Hamilton. She bore him three children: Buena Vista (deceased), William A. (farmer), and J. H. C., school teacher. Mrs. Hutchison died in 1852. In 1861 Mr. Hutchison enlisted in Company E, Seventh Tennessee Infantry, Confederate Army, and was soon elected first lieutenant. In 1862 he was discharged and came back to his native county where he engaged in farming. In 1863 he married Mrs. Catherine Davis, a native of Sumner County, born in 1828, and the fruits of this union were two children: Montgomery (farmer) and Daniel B., now attending school. Mr. Hutchison has been a Democrat all his life, was deputy sheriff in 1853-55, and is a member of the Masonic lodge. Mrs. Hutchison and son, J. H. C. are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. The parents of our subject were James and Margaret (Frazer) Hutchison. The father was a native of Scotland, born near Edinburgh in 1794, and was a farmer by occupation. He moved to Davidson County about 1800, and at the end of one year he came to Sumner County, where he died in 1845. His wife was a native of Sumner County, born in 1800, of English descent, and died in 1836.
