Below is a family biography included in The History of Sumner County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1887.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

Hon. Charles E. Head, one of the leading attorneys of Gallatin, and senior member of the law firm of Head Bros., was born in Sumner County, Tenn., in 1846, and is one of a family of seven children, five of whom are living, born to Hon. John W. and Evaline B. (Brooks) Head. The father was born in Sumner County in 1821, and was of English descent. His education was received by untiring efforts on his own part and while still quite young he began the study of law. As time would permit, he diligently and faithfully applied himself to that study. He was a member of both Houses of the Legislature. In 1858 he was attorney-general and reporter, and the author and publisher of three volumes of Head’s Reports, which are valuable documents to the lawyers of Tennessee. He was judge of the court of arbitration with Senator A. O. P. Nicholson, chief justice in 1873. October 2, 1874, he was elected as congressman for the Fourth Congressional District, and on the 10th of the same month he died. Judge Head was a self-made man in the true sense of the word, was a man of unusual ability, and a wise and discreet counselor. His wife was born in Smith County in 1822, and is now living in Gallatin. His father, Henry Head, was a native of Virginia, and at a very early date immigrated to Sumner County and settled in District No. 1. Charles R., our subject, received his education at Gallatin, and in Forest Home Academy in Kentucky. In 1867 he began studying law with his father and soon entered the law department of Cumberland University, at Lebanon. He and his father afterward formed a partnership, the firm being known as John W. Head & Son. After the death of his father, Charles and his brother Lee formed a partnership under the firm title, Head & Bros. Charles is city attorney of Gallatin and county attorney of Sumner County. The Head Bros. are attorneys for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, and also for Dunn’s commercial agencies. In 1868 Charles married Miss Sophia Childress, daughter of E. H. Childress of Nashville. Mrs. Head died in 1870, leaving one child, Adrian C. In 1874 Mr. Head married Miss Alice Burford, a native of Smith County, born in 1849, and by her had these children: John W., David, Lee, Elizabeth, Allen and Alice. Mr. Head is a member of the I. O. O. F., Lodge No. 13, of the K. of H., K. of P., and he and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
