Below is a family biography included in The History of Lincoln County, Tennessee published by Goodspeed Publishing Company in 1886.  These biographies are valuable for genealogy research in discovering missing ancestors or filling in the details of a family tree. Family biographies often include far more information than can be found in a census record or obituary.  Details will vary with each biography but will often include the date and place of birth, parent names including mothers' maiden name, name of wife including maiden name, her parents' names, name of children (including spouses if married), former places of residence, occupation details, military service, church and social organization affiliations, and more.  There are often ancestry details included that cannot be found in any other type of genealogical record.

DAVID F. HOBBS, a prominent citizen and farmer, is one of eleven children born to Nathaniel and Sarah Hobbs. The father was of English descent, and was born in North Carolina in 1789. He was married in 1812, and came to Lincoln County in 1832, locating in the Sixteenth District. He was a cabinet-maker by occupation, and died in 1861. The mother of our subject was also of English origin, was born in the same State as her husband and about the same year. She died in 1875. Our subject was born in North Carolina July 25, 1820, and received his education in the schools near home. In 1841 he married Sarah Shipp, a native of Lincoln County, born 1823, and the daughter of Louis and Mary (Cole) Shipp. To our subject and wife was born one boy, Pleasant, now a merchant in the Thirteenth District. After marriage Mr. Hobbs engaged with Dr. Bonner, and remained with him nineteen years, overseeing and looking after the interest of the plantation. In 1865 he purchased 155 acres of land in the Thirteenth District, where he located, and has since remained. He has since bought more land, and now he and his son own about 800 acres. He is a Democrat in politics, and cast his first presidential vote for James K. Polk. Pleasant Hobbs, son of our subject, was born April 4, 1844, and received his education in Lincoln County. In 1870 he wedded Laura Halbert, a native of Lincoln County, born in 1854, and by this union became the father of five children: Tula H., Sarah E., David F., Jr., B. and B. M. Pleasant Hobbs, since he has grown to manhood, has been a partner with his father on the farm. December, 1880, he began the mercantile business in the Thirteenth District, where he still continues. September, 1885, J. D. Sugg entered into partnership with them, and the firm is now known as Hobbs & Sugg. They are doing a good business in the sale of dry goods and groceries, and carry about $4,000 worth of stock. Pleasant is a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Masonic fraternity. He and wife are also members of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
