William G. Lumpkin, farmer, is the fourth of eight children, and was born in Lawrence County, Tenn., March 1, 1844. [See James M. Lumpkin’s for parents’ sketch]. He received the education and rearing of the average farmer boy, and at the breaking out of the late war enlisted in the Confederate service in the Ninth Tennessee Cavalry, and served about two years, taking an active part in the battles of Franklin and Nashville. March 30, 1865, was the date of his marriage with Caladonia Springer. To them were born the following children: William J., Gustavus H., Andrew J., Barney P., John B., Lucius T. and Jane Gertrude. Mrs. Lumpkin was born in Lawrence County October 19, 1846. Her father was born in South Carolina, and came to Tennessee when a young man, where he married and reared his family. Mrs. Lumpkin can trace her ancestry back eight centuries.
