Demosthenes Buchanan is a native of Giles County, Tenn., born February 23, 1840, son of Samuel G. and Sarah E. (Bodenhammer) Buchanan, both of whom were born in Tennessee. The father was one of the family of John Buchanan, who was one of the early settlers of Lawrence County, and a member of the State Legislature a number of terms. The father was a prosperous farmer and secured a comfortable competency. His death occurred in May, 1853. The mother yet resides in Giles County. Our subject secured a good common school education, and at the age of twenty-one enlisted in Company D, Third Tennessee Regiment, and served as high private. He was wounded at Fort Donelson, and after residing at home until his wound healed, he, in 1862, joined Company G, Forty-eighth Tennessee Regiment, and served until October of that year, when he was again wounded, for which he was discharged the following August. He farmed in Giles County until 1871, at which time he purchased his present place and has been engaged in farming and stock raising up to the present time. Mr. Buchanan is a Democrat and has been magistrate of the Tenth District a number of years. Alonzo L., Solon, Walter, Franklin, Samuel, John and a little girl deceased are the children born to his marriage with Mary J. Quarles, which took place June 17, 1864. Mrs. Buchanan is a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
