James H. Erwin, farmer and stock raiser, was born in Maury County, Tenn., July 27, 1830. In youth he served a five years’ apprenticeship at the shoe-maker’s trade, and afterward learned and followed the tanner’s trade. In 1867 he began farming, and in time became a successful tiller of the soil. He raises large quantities of corn, and his farm is extensively known as the “Land of Egypt.” He was united in marriage November 22, 1855, to Ocra Ann Harbison, who was born in Maury County, in 1837, and is the mother of these three children: Sallie P., Lulu and Archie A. Mr. Erwin is a Democrat, a Mason and a member of the K. of H., and he and wife are members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. His parents, Theodrick W. and Lucy (Parrish) Erwin, were born in North Carolina and Alabama, in 1800 and 1788 respectively. Our subject’s people came from North Carolina to Tennessee at an early period. Theodrick W. Erwin died April 11, 1874, and his wife in 1833.
