Horatio Clagett, president of the First National Bank of Centreville, Tenn., is the fifth child born to the marriage of Horatio Clagett and Rebecca Gantt, who were born in Prince George County, Md., in 1779 and 1786, respectively. In 1816 they came in a wagon from Maryland to Hickman County, Tenn. Here they spent the remainder of their lives in agricultural pursuits. The father died in 1866, and the mother in 1876. Our subject was born January 17, 1819, and at the age of sixteen years went to Franklin, Tenn., and for two years was engaged as a clerk in the store of Robert Charter. He then came to Centreville, and became a partner with his brother, Wm. G. Clagett, in the mercantile business, and has continued up to the present, they, probably, constituting one of the oldest business firms in Tennessee. Upon the organization of the First National Bank, in 1885, he was chosen its president. Previous to the war he was a Whig in politics; since that time he has voted the Democratic ticket. November 1, 1846, he was married to Miss Elizabeth J. Montgomery, of Hickman County, born October 5, 1826, and to them were born the following children: Matilda T., Mary J., Laura E., Anna S., John H., Robert M. and William G. Mr. Clagett is a Mason, and he and Mrs. Clagett are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South.
